Now the more useful part: those ranges are wide because the sources genuinely disagree, and understanding why they disagree tells you more about your own screen time than any single number will.
Why do screen time statistics contradict each other?
Four reasons, and almost every conflicting headline you have seen traces to one of them.
They measure different devices. "Screen time" sometimes means the phone. Sometimes it means phone plus laptop plus television plus tablet. A study reporting three hours and one reporting seven can both be correct and be measuring different things. Always check the denominator.
Self-reporting versus on-device measurement. Surveys ask people to estimate. Research consistently finds people underestimate their phone use, sometimes substantially. Studies using logged device data almost always report higher figures than studies using questionnaires — so a gap of two hours between two credible sources may just be a gap between two methods.
Background time counts differently. Is a podcast playing while you cook "screen time"? Is a navigation app running on the passenger seat? Some methodologies count any minute the screen is unlocked; others require active interaction. This alone shifts totals by an hour or more.
Population and geography. Global averages hide enormous spread. Countries where the phone is the primary and often only computer report much higher mobile figures than countries with widespread laptop and desktop use. A "global average" applied to a specific country is usually wrong in one direction or the other.
The practical implication: stop comparing yourself to the average. The average is an artefact of methodology. Compare yourself to yourself last month.
The number that actually matters: how fragmented the time is
There is a second body of research that gets far less attention than the hours-per-day statistics, and it is considerably more interesting.
Gloria Mark, professor of informatics at the University of California, Irvine, has measured how long people sustain attention on a single screen for close to two decades. Her findings:

The early work used stopwatches and researchers shadowing participants; later measurements used computer logging. Mark reports that the recent figures were corroborated by five independent studies between 2014 and 2020, and she set out the full body of work in her 2023 book Attention Span.
Forty-seven seconds is the statistic worth carrying around. Six hours of screen time spent in three long sessions is a completely different day from six hours spent in four hundred fragments, and only one of those is compatible with doing anything demanding. The hours number tells you about consumption. The fragmentation number tells you about capability.
How much screen time is too much?
There is no validated clinical threshold for adults. Anyone quoting a specific number of hours as the danger line is inventing it.
What the research does associate with harm is more specific than duration:
- Displacement. Screen time that replaces sleep, exercise, or in-person contact is where the reliable negative associations live. Six hours that displaces nothing looks very different from three hours that eats your sleep.
- Timing. Use in the hour before bed is associated with worse sleep quality with more consistency than total daily hours.
- Passive versus active. Scrolling feeds and directed use — messaging a specific person, looking something up, doing work — track differently in the wellbeing literature.
- Volition. Whether you chose to open it. This is not usually measured, and it is probably the most important variable of all.
A more useful self-test than counting hours: over the last week, how many times did you unlock your phone with no idea why? That number, not the total, is the one that predicts whether you will feel good about your usage at the end of the month.
What to measure instead
If you want a personal baseline that means something, track these four for one week before changing anything:
- Pickups per day, not minutes. Available in iPhone Screen Time and Android Digital Wellbeing. It is a better proxy for fragmentation than total time.
- Longest unbroken stretch away from the phone during working hours. This is the number that moves when your focus genuinely improves.
- First-hour and last-hour use. Screen time in the hour after waking and the hour before sleeping, tracked separately. These two hours carry disproportionate weight.
- Minutes in feed-shaped apps specifically, separated from messaging, navigation and work. Total screen time lumps these together and thereby hides the only category most people actually want to reduce.
Week two, change one thing. Week three, compare. That is a real measurement; "the average person spends X hours" is trivia.
